The Power of Saying "Hosanna": Understanding Palm Sunday's Deeper Meaning

On Palm Sunday, we remember Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. But beyond the palm branches and celebrations lies a deeper meaning about our relationship with God and our need for salvation.

On Palm Sunday, we remember Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. But beyond the palm branches and celebrations lies a deeper meaning about our relationship with God and our need for salvation.

What Does "Hosanna" Really Mean?

"Hosanna" means "Lord help" or "Lord save." It's a cry for deliverance and salvation. When the crowds shouted "Hosanna" as Jesus entered Jerusalem, they were expressing their desperate need for God's intervention and help.

Three Reasons We Should Cry "Hosanna"

1. Save Us From Our Suffering

We all experience suffering in different ways. Whether it's physical, emotional, or spiritual suffering, crying "Hosanna" acknowledges our need for God's help and deliverance. We don't have to suffer alone - God wants to help us through our trials.

2. Save Us From Ourselves

Often our greatest enemy is ourselves - our doubts, fears, and self-destructive behaviors. When we cry "Hosanna," we're asking God to save us from our own worst tendencies and help us get out of our own way.

3. Save Us From Our Sin

Most importantly, we need salvation from our sin. None of us can hit the mark of God's perfect standard on our own. We need Jesus to make things right between us and God. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus provides the salvation we desperately need.

Why Some People Resist Praise

Just like the Pharisees who told Jesus to quiet His disciples, some people are uncomfortable with exuberant praise. But genuine worship comes from a heart that recognizes its need for God. When we understand what God has done for us, praise is the natural response.

Life Application

This week, practice crying out "Hosanna" in your daily life:

  • When you face difficulties, cry "Hosanna" - Lord help!

  • When you struggle with yourself, cry "Hosanna" - Lord save!

  • When you're aware of your sin, cry "Hosanna" - Lord deliver!

Ask yourself:

  • What areas of my life need God's intervention right now?

  • Am I willing to openly express my need for God?

  • Do I truly understand my need for salvation?

  • How can I cultivate a more grateful, praise-filled attitude?

Remember: Just as Jesus entered Jerusalem that first Palm Sunday, He wants to enter our lives today. Will you welcome Him with shouts of "Hosanna"?
